The Mount Olive council meeting convened at 7:00 P.M. on January 19th/with a packed crowd estimated at over 220 with standing room only and an additional 40 to 50 in the halls outside of the chamber. The Mayor read his letter to the residents, as posted here on BuddLake.com, adding that he had met with the squads to propose a compromise of partial funding the squads leaving only on rig at each town. (I was made aware that this proposal was made to the squads at a meeting held only 23 hours earlier.) The Mayor said this effort was NOT budget related but in the intrest of health and safety of the residents.
The council then heard from the Flanders and Budd Lake squads to repudiate the Mayors’ proposal. Some of the issues brought out were:
--Originally the Mayor approached the EMS squads with only the budget concerns, but later changed the issue to response times. In addition these numbers did not agree with those recieved from Atlantic Ambulance.
--Discrepancies in the response times the Mayor produced – the mayor was asked to produce the full data. --The Mayor did not fully understand all of the functions of the squads when he made his proposals.
--The budget numbers submitted by the Budd Lake squad were inaccurate due to a clerical error on the squads part, revisions were sent but not acknowledged.
--Atlantic Ambulance has no experience in taking complete control – day and night – of a any other towns EMS to date.(information volunteered by Atlantic representatives) They also acknowledged they were considering reducing the number of rigs from 2 to 1 due to profitablilty. |

Honorable President Phil Tobey andMembers of the Township CouncilTownship of Mount OliveMount Olive, NJ
Mr. Tobey, Last week we spoke on the phone and you assured me that the Mayors EMS recommendation was not about money, but rather the public safety. With that in mind I contacted the Mayor who provided me the budget planning sheet, a letter expressing his budget and safety concerns, and chart showing call time response data with an agreement to publish on buddlake.com. After studying this information I was invited to ask additional questions again, with the intent of publishing the results for the residents to read before the meeting on January 19 (see page 2). These questions have gone unanswered.

Mt Olive Township is getting ready to stop your Volunteer Emergency Medical Services. Read On. After more than 50 years of responding to the needs of their sick, hurt and scared neighbors, the mayor wants to eliminate these proud and necessary services to save what he estimates is $250,000 a year. He would replace them with a paid service that would charge users more than $400 each time an ambulance is called out and you the residence would be charged whether you have insurance or not! |
